Glossary
Open Size
The size of the material when your document is opened up or before folding. Applicable when you are printing books, brochures, packaging box, corporate folders or any other printing material which has folding. (Example : an 8.3" x 1.7") 4-page brochures opened up as a 2-page spread would be 16.5" x 11.7")
Closed Size
The size of the material when your document is closed or what you see when your finished product is folded. Applicable when you are printing books, brochures, packaging box, corporate folders or any other printing material which has folding.
Total Printing Colors
The common choices available is 1 color, 2 colors, 3 colors or full colors or Spot. If your printing has colored pictures, it would most probably consider full color (when the total colors are more than 3 colors). Spot colors are run separately. It is normally suitable for people who is particular on certain color to be appeared on the printing.
Pantone
A universal colouring reference system
Bleeds
Printing that goes to the edge of the sheet after trimming.
Trim Size
The final size of one printed image after the last trim is made.
Saddle Stitch
Two staples binded to the center of the piece of paper on the fold line. It is commonly used for magazine binding.
Perfect Bind
A squared off edge and glued pages. It is commonly used for book binding.
Perforation
Creation of holes for the purpose of tear out. It is commonly use for coupons and business forms.
Film Positive or negative film used to create the printing plates. Once the film has been made any changes to the copy will require the production of a new film.
Plates
T he printing plate carries the image to be printed and transfers it through the printing process onto the paper. Plates come in many formats depending on the type of printing machine and its size.
Die Cut
Piece of cardboard, paper, or other material that has been cut into a special shape or design in a process similar to printing.
Hot Stamping
Metallic or colored finish on a surface.
Usually through a thermal bonding or hot stamping process. It is commonly used in greeting cards.
Gloss
A shiny look reflecting light.
Matt Lamination
Dull paper or ink finish
UV Coating
Liquid laminate bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. Environmentally friendly.
CMYK
Abreviation for the four process color inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.
Offset Printing
Currently the most common commercial printing method, in which ink is offset from the printing plate to to a second roller then to paper.
Digital Printing
A type of printing which uses digital imaging process that transfers the image directly onto plain paper imediately, without traditional offset rollers and plates.
RGB
Abreviation for Red Green Blue. The colors used by a computer monitor to create color images on the screen. When all three colors are combined over each other the color of light is white.
